Good thing this ain't the Radiohead forum. I posted a dissenting opinion during a circle jerk concerning Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska and, well, Radiohead fans will be Radiohead fans. Actually I think I'll copy/paste your opinions on Loveless and get burned at the stake again.

look mang. i respect your opinions regarding Radiohead. i just don't think you should let other douchey Radiohead fans color you opinion of them. if you don't like the music then you don't like the music. i respect your personal dislike more than those "intellectual" Radiohead fanz that i personally have not come across but i would certainly know how to deal w/ them if i didn't like Radiohead.

"Soon" just sounds so fucking dated. especially the drums (drums machine???) and ESPECIALLY that bassline. Oh man I love that song the drums are one of my favourite parts for me they really should have aged badly but they just don't. Also I hope everyone has heard the Glider EP because that is some fine stuff, Don't Ask Why is definitely one of my favourites. As is Glider & Off Your Face...

Make no mistake. I liked and subsequently disliked the music before encountering any fanz. And it would appear that I am overly preoccupied with the whole thing. Pretty bored over here sometimes. I'm human. An asshole on occasion, but c'est la vie. Speaking of which, "Sometimes" will always be my jam.

"blown a wish" is my favorite song, but by a very small margin. i find that most people don't like that song as much as i do.

I have a friend who has met Kevin a couple of times and has said that Kevin is the only musician (etc) he has met that wasn't a dissapointment and completely nice and cool. Interesting note chaps.

i remember when i went to the richmond show, i saw his head poking out of the venue unloading gear. i wanted to be like, "HEY, I'M REALLY PSYCHED FOR THE SHOW!!" but i didn't want to startle anyone. i was just happy that i saw them; for some reason, i felt the show was a sham or a joke, because i found nothing about that show online.

i when i listened to it today i thought "blown a wish" sounded like a third-rate Cocteau Twins song in the worst possible sort of way.
also. i am done. wasting my time. it is futile. enjoy "loveless" until your hearts content. or you die.
PL you can lick my shaved ballz while i slap my greasy cock on your ashy fo head.

maybe one day i'll get it. just not today. i am a pretty open-minded person & when enough people rave about something i'll definitely seek it out and give it a gander. sometimes it takes me a while to cotton to certain albums also.
do you have to be on a whole bunch of drugs to understand "Loveless" or something? or have undergone some sort of traumatic break-up. what made it "click" for you? is it a fall record? winter record? et cetera...tell me...or does you simply have to rolls eyes have "good taste."

well, i can't totally explain why it clicked for me, but..
1) i have never done drugs. i'm not averse to the idea, but i haven't and don't want to yet. 2) i have never been in a serious relationship with anyone. 3) i bought it on election day 2008 on a whim. i knew people said that it was a great record, but i had already heard songs in the past and thought they were just noise. that said, i hadn't heard those songs in, like, nine or so months, so i figured i might have a difference of opinion at that point. besides, it was only $11, which is cheap for suburban bookstores.
i feel like it wasn't a totally serious issue with my health, but my last autumn and winter were characterized by heavy doses of anxiety, discomfort, and nervous tension, and it really kept me from being happy for a long time. i can't speak for the lyrics - even they don't know what they are in some places - but i could relate to the way it sounded. i didn't really like it very much the first couple of listens. there were obvious "singles," but this wasn't the kind of album i'd heap praise on like people do. a journal-ish article about a fan's story about when he bought the album in 1991 (it was a website from, like, 1999, so it was pre-blogger) mentioned "blown a wish" as the song that struck him the most. i listened to that song and was totally enamored, as if i'd never heard it before. slowly but surely, the other songs clicked.
on the surface, it was (to me) a very vicious, cold album, but once i listened to it more and let the sounds take me, it opened up for me. what i felt was a misanthropic monster of a record turned out to be a warm one with (at least sonically) the same kinds of anxieties i had, and it helped me overcome them. call me emo, but i just kind of made that connection to it.

When You Sleep was the first song that clicked for me and it's still my number 1.

Loveless is one of those albums where I can't pay attention to the music. I put it on, and just doze off. It's much better music when you don't focus on it too much.

Haha this a thread I can really dig into. I saw some different pictures of Kevin's pedals a couple of days before this thread went up. Seemed almost unbelievable to me. He always claimed his distinctive sound came mostly from the way he held the taped up tremolo arm as he strummed. MBV is so loud live, IDK how much the pedals matter. I was at the Richmond show too, Ben, and frankly I was kind of disappointed. The vocals are so buried in the mix or just overwhelmed by the guitars you can barely hear them at all. The 'holocaust' section at the end was a unique and interesting experience, but ultimately I thought it was a gimmick, a thrill like an amusement park ride, not a religious experience or anything. They just stand there strumming the guitars - not playing notes or chords - with everything turned up to 11. I did feel trapped in the moment and lost track of time, but I didn't think there was anything musical about it. I was more impressed by the bass player and drummer, Debbie Googe and Colm O'Ciosig, who rocked really hard.
I got into Loveless because of the meditative guitar sounds - the white noise and whatnot. I also think it's really melodic. And comforting. Very much a summer or spring record. Anyone averse to hazy, fuzzy layers of guitar wouldn't like Loveless. It has become overrated over the years. Its definitely a solid 5 star album, but I don't believe any album is perfect (if you really want to know, there's something about the eq or mix that sounds thin to me; there's not much definition to the drums). I have no idea which song has which title, as I nearly always listen to the whole album through.
All of that said, Shields & Co. are still one of my top three favorite bands.
